If you suspect you’ve found the coconut rhinoceros beetle in Hawaii, contact the Hawaii Department of Agriculture’s Pest Hotline. If you live in Hawaii, you can take many steps to protect the State’s coconut palms from this damaging pest: Invasive pests can hitchhike in international cargo and passenger baggage. USDA and its partners continue to look into how it was introduced into Hawaii. The pest is native to South and Southeast Asia, but it has been introduced throughout Asia and the Western Pacific. The CRB’s Native Habitat and How It Came to Hawaii Survey specialists service traps every 1 to 2 weeks. Traps are scentless and harmless to humans and pets. The larvae feed and develop in dead coconut palms and decaying palm debris, or other types of decaying organic mulch.ĬRB traps are equipped with both pheromone lures and solar powered UV/LED lights to attract adult beetles. The larvae (or grubs) are usually yellowish-white and can grow quite long, reaching almost 4 inches or more. Photo by Peter Lillywhite, Museum Victoria, Pests and Diseases Image Library. The CRB’s favorite habitats for breeding sites are dead, standing coconut trees and fallen coconut logs, but they can survive on many different types of decaying vegetation.Īdult male (note the larger horn). They look stout, measuring about 2 inches long and 3 quarters of an inch to almost an inch wide. It has a horn on the top of its head, which is why it’s called a rhinoceros beetle. The adult is a big, shiny, and dark brown or black beetle. The survey information will help the response team to formulate its response strategies. Conduct public outreach and education about the CRB and how to report suspected beetles or signs of infestation.Limit pest spread by eliminating plant debris that could be used for breeding sites and,.Deploy detection and delimitation traps to determine the infestation’s boundaries.USDA is coordinating with the Hawaii Department of Agriculture, the University of Hawaii, Military Leadership (Navy and Airforce) at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickem the U.S. This damage results from beetles boring through developing leaves. If the pest were to be introduced into the continental United States, it could damage date palm production. The CRB has also been recorded feeding on economically important commercial crops such as bananas, sugarcane, papayas, sisal, pineapples, taro and date palms. That’s why Hawaiians like to call coconut palms and other Polynesian-transported plants “canoe plants.” It was one of the useful plants the original Polynesians brought to Hawaii on their voyaging canoes. Pacific Islanders deeply value the coconut palm for its cultural importance. Their beauty is treasured by residents and tourists alike. Younger palms are more vulnerable than mature ones.Ĭoconut palms are an important part of Hawaii’s ecosystem, nursery industry, and iconic scenery. This damage can significantly reduce coconut production and kill the palms. They bore into the center of the crown (or top), where they injure young, growing tissue and feed on the sap. The adult CRB damages coconut and other palms. They identified two breeding sites in compost piles located at golf courses on the base. Since the initial find, survey specialists have detected additional adults in traps in the same area. In December 2013, an adult coconut rhinoceros beetle (CRB) was trapped in a pest survey trap at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii.

He is currently director of the Initiative on Communication Innovation and Impact at Columbia University’s climate school. “It’s tough to navigate this terrain because the language around climate and cleanliness is really such a hot button,” Revkin said in an interview yesterday. Within hours, thousands of Twitter users had liked or reposted Fisch-Friedman’s tweet, including former New York Times environmental writer Andrew Revkin, who linked to a Times column he wrote in 2008 calling “clean coal” technology a “pipe dream.” Logging on to Twitter on Sunday at 7:38 p.m., Fisch-Friedman wrote, “Okay I am sorry for the spoilers for Monday’s crossword but clean coal is not a ‘greener energy source.’ Do better.” "This really demonstrates how easy it is for misinformation to spread," said Fisch-Friedman, who is 27. She originally thought the answer was “wind power.” The controversy began Sunday night after the Times posted the Monday crossword online and Molly Fisch-Friedman, an analyst at the environmental group Climate Nexus, solved the puzzle and began fuming about 47 across.įisch-Friedman, who has been doing crosswords since she was in middle school in New Jersey, was incredulous that the Times would imply that coal is an environmentally friendly energy source. “The fact that that filtered down to something like The New York Times crossword puzzle is an example of how these approaches by industry are ultimately successful at influencing our discussions and approach toward climate,” Hastings-Simon said in an interview. Sara Hastings-Simon, a University of Calgary physicist and Times crossword aficionado, said there was “such a violent reaction” to the crossword clue because promises of “clean coal” have been used “as this delay tactic, as a way to say we don’t need to do anything else” to address climate change. The Times’ backtracking shows the fading acceptance in the Biden years of the once-popular phrase “clean coal.” The Energy Department has abolished the Office of Clean Coal and Carbon Management established under President Trump, who romanced about “beautiful, clean coal.” And the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity recently changed its name to America’s Power. “For the Times to actually embrace coal is a mortal sin - and I’m Catholic.” “They got pounded by their base,” former coal lobbyist Fred Palmer said in an interview. It’s also a minor humiliation for Will Shortz, the legendary New York Times puzzle editor who, according to the puzzle constructor, changed her original clue and inserted the error over her objection. The newer 1.8-litre was less powerful but smoother and more efficient than the older 2.3-litre engine (143 kW (194 PS) compared to 140 kW (190 PS). The C 230 Kompressor variant sported 140 kW (188 hp). All of them used the same 1.8-litre engine, with different designations according to horsepower levels, including a version powered by natural gas. Then in 2002 for the 2003 model year, a new family of supercharged four cylinder engines, dubbed M271, debuted for the entire C-Class range. The third body variant, a station wagon codenamed S203 arrived in 2001. The US model, labeled C 230 Kompressor, became available for the 2002 model year with the M111.981 engine, a 1.8 -liter supercharged inline-four making 143 kW (192 hp) at 5500 rpm and 280 N⋅m (210 lb⋅ft) at 2500–4800 rpm. Mercedes-Benz debuted a coupe variant in October 2000 (launching in 2001), labelled the C-Class SportCoupé and given the internal designation CL203 (see below). There was a version of this car that was made in Korea. Six-speed manual gearboxes were now standard for the entire range, except the C 320. The diesels now featured common rail direct fuel injection and variable geometry turbochargers. Most of the engines were carried over from the W202, but the C 320 was exclusive, offering 160 kW (218 PS). The sedan debuted with a range of inline-four and V6 petrol engines and inline-four and -five diesels. The second generation C-Class was unveiled on March 21, 2000, going on sale starting in September 2000. Testing began in 1997, with development concluding in 2000. Design patents were filed on 20 April 1998 and 4 March 1999. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class (W203) is the internal designation for a range of compact executive cars manufactured and marketed by DaimlerChrysler from 2000 to early 2007, as the second generation of the C-Class - in sedan/saloon, three-door liftback (marketed as the SportCoupé and sub-designated CL203) and station wagon/estate (sub-designated S-203) body styles.ĭesign work on the W203 C-Class began in mid-1994, with the final design being approved in December 1995 by the executive board. Flamingo Island/Iguana Island: I was a little unclear on the layout of these two islands before arriving. Another boat comes every 15 minutes so, no matter what, your wait isn't very long. It usually fills up most the way, but the ride is comfortable and takes about 15 minutes to get to the island (you're in site of the shoreline the entire time, so nothing too scary). It's smaller, but can carry about 20 people. Getting there: you can catch the boat from either the marina or ocean suites hotels (Renaissance Hotels). Our personal butler was Gregory, and he was great! Came around quite often to get whatever you needed, and if you needed him in the interim, just pull up your little white flag on your cabana and he'd come right by. We had a couple pina coladas, the flamingo specialty drink, chips/salsa, and tacos. We were able to order from a menu, which allowed for drinks (wine, champagne, beer, cocktails, soda, etc) and food. Also a netted hammock with some pillows over the water. On the patio area of the cabana is 2 more lounge chairs, a shower, and a large round swinging chair (specific only to #3001). The cabana has a couch on the inside, a chair, and a table, with snorkel equipment in the table, plus towels and two "lay-on" floats. We had a great time there, were provided a bottle of champagne, 2 bottles of water, 2 bottles of sparkling water, a fruit platter, and ice cream bars. I think we were #3001, which is the one on the very end, and has the best views with the most amount of privacy. We rented a cabana at flamingo island, and it was definitely worth it. What the Jotun typically lack in speed, they make up for in power, where being in the wrong place at the wrong time during a fight will mean your end in two hits. A blacksmith giant has you fighting in a neverending firestorm. Halfway through the frost giant’s fight, the playing field turns into a sheet of slippery ice when it’s down to a quarter bar of life, a white-out blizzard starts. A terrifying shield-swinging giant can summon a legion of dwarves out of the ground to rush at Thora with a scream. Still, each of the bosses are just wonderfully realized, and you get maybe a good minute to marvel at them before the pain starts. The best is still the first: A nature giant that feels like Ursula from The Little Mermaid made entirely out of living trees and vines. The Jotun are simply awe-inspiring enemy design, taking the rather threadbare descriptions from Norse lore, and extrapolating them to the nth degree, with each one several times Thora’s size onscreen. The main events of the game, however, are the Jotun themselves as bosses. And this is why pruning your garden once a week is just so important. The real problem with that desolation is that more than a few times, you’ll need to backtrack through some of these areas to find much needed power ups, or because you’ve missed a crucial switch in order to get to said power ups, or because you’ve ended up in an area and the game’s obtuse pause screen map didn’t help you. This bolsters the comparisons to Shadow of the Colossus, where the loneliness of what Thora has to do makes the sheer distance between each new obstacle feel like a greater journey. The game isn’t swarming with enemies, except for one particular stage that sends a veritable legion of dwarves your way. They’re also often rather desolate places, dark locales that no mortal has tread upon in ages. Grand, breathtaking vistas are the norm in Jotun, and they often serve as a wicked distraction from the dangers mere inches away. They are deceptively linear, laid out in such a way that gives the impression of vast, stunning tableaus in places dwarfed in size by your typical Diablo III dungeon. Jotun’s six stages, which can be tackled in any order, are impeccably designed. Primarily, timing, cunning, and luck will get Thora to Valhalla.įor most of the game, that cunning involves mastery of the environment. Thora can find massive shrines to the Gods in each stage, and by praying there, she earns new magical powers specific to each one-Thor allows her to use Mjolnir for a short time, Frigg allows her to heal at will, Loki creates a decoy that eventually explodes after a time-but all six of the powers have limited uses, and none are what you would call a guaranteed solution to any sticky situation. You have a light attack with Thora’s axe, a hard-hitting heavy attack with a major delay, and a dodge. Gameplay is 16-bit levels of simple, and yes, that is a compliment. Even if the gameplay wasn’t as good as it was, being able to help Thora achieve glory would be more than worth the effort. Each new piece of her story would be worth it on its own, revealing years of underestimation, neglect, and later, a sibling jealousy that turns tragic. We learn between stages where Thora’s determination comes from in a fantastic, steely narration performed in Icelandic. Otherwise, all she has is an iron axe and an iron will. Along the way, the gods assist her, granting her new power when she finds their shrines and pays her respects. Because passage to Valhalla is only granted to those who fall in battle, Thora is given the chance to earn her way into the golden halls by finding and killing the Jotun, the Titans of Norse mythology. Jotun tells the tale of Thora, a Viking shield maiden who falls from her boat during a voyage and drowns. It’s a wonderfully wild, vibrant bedtime story told with fire and verve, even when the game is at its most stark and lonely. In execution, Jotun is a perfect storybook, a game that seems ripped from the imagination of a Viking child being told tales of warriors of old facing down their gods. Now imagine all of that hand-drawn in a style somewhere between Dragon’s Lair and Princess Mononoke, and you’ve got Jotun.īoiling the game down to its disparate parts does the game a mild disservice, though. Sprinkle in a little bit of Dark Souls’ difficulty and a malevolent sense of challenge, and you’re closer to hitting the bullseye. Imagine the bleakness of the man versus giant creatures gameplay of Shadow of the Colossus as a definitively Nordic tale, and you have a general idea of what Jotun is. This means that aside from a volume knob and defrost functions, it’s now necessary to dig into the screen to access almost every function that previously fell quickly to the fingertips, adding a layer of frustration and inconvenience to drivers (but pleasing the accountants whose complaints about spending fueled the change). The move to iDrive 8 from last year’s 7 has improved the system’s usable on-screen real estate, but it’s also wiped out the row of climate control and preset buttons that used to sit directly below it. On the center console the once sporty shift knob has been replaced by a vestigial nub that is flicked forward and backward to engage gears, while the gauge binnacle directly in front of the driver has swapped its cowl for a rectangular plastic screen that stretches flat and unremarkable across the dashboard to meet up with the same-size infotainment display. The M340i’s cabin offers the clearest indication of where the automaker has elected to pull price out of the vehicle. It took me nearly a thousand miles behind the wheel, crossing through the Hudson Valley that lies between Montreal and New York City, to suss out the strengths and weaknesses of the M340i’s new place in the premium car pantheon. With BMW’s stated mission of slicing a quarter from the production costs of every new model, extending the 3 Series charm into this new era is a tall order, especially when that bottom line focus is thrust directly into the face of the driver. What, then, to make of the 2023 BMW M340i? It’s the first refresh of the brand’s most popular four-door to emerge from the new cost-cutting mindset currently ruling the roost in its native Munich. While the second half of that two-part promise has been increasingly attenuated by the growth of the 3 Series platform (and the inevitable weight gains that come with it), its cabin and features have largely held up their end of the bargain in making this small sedan feel like it belongs to a more upscale universe. For the past 15-ish years, the BMW 3 Series has offered loyal customers the chance to enjoy executive car trappings packaged in a chassis that’s a bit more playful than nearly any other compact luxury option. |
